Hey everyone! When I finally got my sample, our Buckwheat Leaf Juice Powder shot up to one of my favorite juice powders. It’s an olive green, totally different from our other green powders, and it tastes different too – so gentle and humbling that it’s easy to take a lot of it. Made from the young leaves of buckwheat, it’s the top food in the world for rutin. It’s almost as if God created it for our vascular health.
1. The World’s Top Rutin Food
Buckwheat leaves have more than double the rutin of amaranth leaves, the next-highest food, and up to 10× more than moringa. Rutin content is highest when the leaves are young, as in our powder.
2. Rutin + Quercetin: Inflammation and Allergies
Rutin is a precursor to quercetin: it’s quercetin bound to a rutinose sugar, which gut enzymes cleave off. About 20–50% of the rutin you eat becomes quercetin, and the powder naturally contains quercetin too. Quercetin is one of the most powerful antioxidants in nature, calming inflammation, supporting immune function and acting as one of the most powerful natural antihistamines in the plant kingdom. It stabilizes the mast cells that release histamine, helping calm allergic reactions, seasonal allergies and respiratory irritation.
3. Stronger Capillaries and Blood Vessels
Studies show rutin strengthens capillaries and reduces vascular permeability. Because it’s highly water-soluble, it reaches the cells lining your blood vessels directly. What’s miraculous is that rutin enhances collagen cross-linking in capillary walls, directly strengthening them – the mechanism studies highlight as central to its effects. It also scavenges reactive oxygen species and inhibits NF-κB and TNF-α, calming vascular inflammation. → See Cardiovascular Health.
4. How It Protects Nitric Oxide
- It mops up superoxide. Superoxide radicals are the main molecules that destroy nitric oxide, forming damaging peroxynitrite. Rutin neutralizes them, so your vessels stay relaxed longer.
- It keeps eNOS coupled. The enzyme eNOS makes nitric oxide from L-arginine, but it needs the cofactor BH4. When BH4 is oxidized, eNOS makes superoxide instead. Rutin protects BH4 from oxidation and helps recycle it from BH2 by supporting the enzyme DHFR, so more nitric oxide is made.
5. More Flavonoids, Minerals and Skin Protection
It’s also loaded with orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, isovitexin and hyperoside, which strengthen capillaries and improve endothelial function, plus catechins, gallic acid and chlorogenic acid. Its extremely high magnesium relaxes vessels. These same flavonoids protect the skin: orientin and isoorientin blunt UVB damage, and vitexin derivatives help counter UVA-induced aging.
You also get your daily chlorophyll hit, plus manganese, zinc, copper, iron, vitamins C and K, B vitamins, lutein and zeaxanthin.
6. 55:1 and Truly Raw
It takes 55 kilos of young buckwheat greens to make 1 kilo of powder, making it the most concentrated whole-food rutin source on the planet. It comes from the only company with the technology to make truly raw juice powders: the juice is suspended mid-air and dried. In lab tests shared in earlier newsletters, their powders kept their flavonoid polyphenols, while other drying methods showed very little or none, because heat destroys them.
How to Take It
Stir a spoonful into water or juice, or take it straight. It’s gentle enough that it’s easy to take a lot. It’s always great to get a wide variety of nutrition, and this is another set of raw living nutrients alongside your other greens.
