Magtein (Magnesium L-Threonate): The Magnesium That Reaches Your Brain

Hey everyone! Magtein is a breakthrough magnesium originally developed to support memory. It’s the only magnesium I know of that can actually cross the blood-brain barrier and reach your brain – and a lot of people tell me they sleep incredibly deep on it.

1. Crossing the Blood-Brain Barrier

In one study, common forms of magnesium were tested to see how well they cross the blood-brain barrier. After 24 days, Magtein was the only one that significantly raised magnesium concentration in the brain. It also penetrated neurons better than other forms, improving synapse density – the connections between brain cells. Another study found brain magnesium was higher with Magtein than with no supplement or other magnesium forms, because threonate transports the mineral to brain neurons.

2. Why Brain Magnesium Matters

Researchers have found magnesium levels decreased in the blood and brain tissue of people with memory decline. Magnesium is required for many brain processes, including the NMDA receptor, which is critical for memory formation. Once you get magnesium past the blood-brain barrier, you feed the brain: more synapses and more synaptic activity. Magnesium also gets harder to absorb as we age, and high blood sugar can make the kidneys excrete more of it. → See Brain Health.

3. The Cognition Trial

In a published human clinical trial, Magtein was tested on four types of cognitive function: executive function, working memory, episodic memory and attention. Every area improved, and overall cognitive ability improved significantly over placebo at 6 and 12 weeks. Four published preclinical studies also found Magtein improved memory. It has also been studied in adults for sleep issues and anxiety. → See Stress.

4. What Magtein Is

Magtein is magnesium L-threonate – a patented combination of magnesium and threonic acid, a vitamin C compound, developed by a group of MIT researchers. The threonic acid is what lets the magnesium cross into the brain. Ours is one single ingredient: 100% pure Magtein powder, nothing else. Its cousin, Calcium L-Threonate, uses the same threonate for calcium.

5. Sleep and Dreams

When you take Magtein before bed, you’ll most likely sleep extremely well and very deep, and remember your dreams a lot better. Multiple customers have confirmed this – though of course everyone is different. → See Sleep.

How to Take It

The recommended amount is about 2,000 mg (2 grams) a day – about 1/2 teaspoon total. I recommend 1 gram (about 1/4 teaspoon) in the morning and another before bed. Be patient: it may take a month or so to start working. In the trial, significant improvement showed at 6 weeks and even more at 12.
