Hey everyone! In the spiritual world, our two greatest weapons are prayer and focus. For nourishing the brain those spiritual processes run through, I consider our Sunflower Lecithin the #1 spiritual nutrient.
1. Sunflower Lecithin
Choline and phosphorus
Our Sunflower Lecithin contains two critical nutrients for the brain: choline and phosphorus. Choline is a major precursor to acetylcholine, the brain’s main neurotransmitter for learning and memory. One and a third tablespoons contain 325–375 mg of choline. That’s the same as 6–7 large red potatoes, the top vegan, non-soy food source.
One heaping tablespoon also contains about 270 mg of organic phosphorus, almost three times what you get from an egg yolk. In the 1800s, the chemist Justus von Liebig coined the saying “Without phosphorus, no thoughts.” The brain is high in phosphorus, mostly bound up with lecithins.
Why I call it a spiritual nutrient
Lecithin is extremely abundant in the pineal gland. Phospholipids like lecithin make up about 30% of the brain’s weight and carry information between brain cells. In his 1957 book, Dr. R. W. Bernard wrote that the gray matter of the brain contains 17% lecithin, which he called “the essential and indispensable medium through which the higher intellectual processes manifest themselves.”
How to take it
About 2 tablespoons a day gives you practically all the choline you need. Lecithin dissolves in alcohol, so limiting alcohol helps protect these brain nutrients over the long run. Ours is cold-pressed from organic sunflower seeds with no hexane, and I prefer sunflower to soy lecithin.
